The roof of the school, Success Adegor, the 7 year old girl, whose video went viral after she was driven away for school fees, was attending, Okotie Primary School, Sapele, in Sapele Local Government area of Delta State, was said to have collapsed during school hours in 2016.
The dilapidated school building that came to light when Success Adegor’s video, where she complained about being sent home from the public school, went viral and attracted the sympathy of celebrities like Ayodeji Richard Makun, popularly known as AY and others, Advocate was informed not only came crashing down during school hours in 2016, the top floor of the building has been completely abandoned due to the dilapidated roof.
“A source, who was staying close to the school told Advocate the school was built in the 50s “when we were small. It was built by Late Chief Festus Okotie Eboh and was then known as Ziks Academy but when the present site of where Ziks Grammar School is now, was built, the students now relocated to that site and this site was then used as a primary school and named as Okotie Eboh Primary School.
“During the Nigeria’ civil war, the soldiers lodged here and we were the one running errands for them then” the source, who claimed to have attended Ziks Academy when it was moved from the original site and begged to conceal his identity, said.
The source went further that “In 2016, the roof of the school came crashing down. It was during school period but thank God, no one was injured, and after that the Parents Teachers Association, PTA, meeting was called and then the parents were tasked to contribute to the roofing, that is why you can see those aluminium sheets that is a bit new, different from the rest and you can see that they have completely abandoned the top part of the building and they now merge classes to accommodate the pupils.
“That place has become laterine for people in this area. No security and people now come to smoke and sleep with women and even defaecate here and most times when the pupils resume in the morning, they have to deal with washing these faeces before settling down to learn” the source added.
Meanwhile the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Ifeanyi OKowa, Mr. Charles Aniagwu has said that it was wrong to have put the blame on the shoulders of the Delta State Government as public schools in Delta State are completely free from tuition fees. The statement which read: “Our attention has been drawn to a virile video online of a little girl purportedly from Delta State where she alleged that she was driven from school because her parents were unable to pay her school fees” went on to say
“We have also watched the video and read several comments on the matter where mischief makers tried to put culpability on the State Government. While we empathise with the little girl and her parents over her ordeal, it is important to state that Delta State Government runs free education at both primary and secondary school levels in all public schools in the state and therefore it is impossible to assume that the little girl was sent home from a public school in Delta State” insisting that the Okowa led administration since assumption of office has built and reconstructed over 4,000 classroom blocks and provided furniture, learning and instructional materials to public schools in the state with a view to making them conducive and competitive with the private schools.
