The Advocate Editorial Policy
The Advocate as a Regional newspaper, shall be a newspaper of class with focus on politics, Arts and Culture, Entrepreneurship (small business), Ecotourism and Oil and Gas politics. We shall not only provide citizens the platform to voice their Concern, Fears and Aspirations through robust civic engagement, but may set aside its objective news-gathering role (if need be), to join its readers in a dialogue about important issues of the day–to exhort, explain, deplore, mourn, applaud or champion, as the case may be, as long as, we consider any issue in our judgment to be of public importance.
Intellectual honesty is the hallmark of our editorial policy. We shall strive to be sincere, coherent, consistent and skeptical, and, (if need be), to have a sense of humour and a hint of mischief. And a sense of humility, too, in recognizing when we are wrong and when our positions shift in light of new facts, developments or information.
In our news stories, features, and editorials, we shall strives to reflect the sociocultural and political dynamism of the Niger Delta region, with particular emphasis on the old Bendel State. The region’s iconic status, as the breadwinner and the sustainer of our lopsided country shall be brought to global map. Greater attention shall be paid to its entrepreneurial spirit and its extraordinary cultural diversity, as its distinguishing strengths, and we believe that all Niger Deltans should have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams.
The Advocate editorial judgment shall be without regard to partisanship, or influenced by an individual or political organization. We shall be fair to all manners of people, providing an open access for people to ventilate their opinion without Fear or Favour, but with regard to the concept of Development and community Journalism as our theoretical framework.
Our Social Contract:
Our social contract with the people of the Niger-Delta, is to: Demand for accountability from the people’s representatives in government, promote the rule of law and support policies that encourage commerce and growth and that raise living standards of our people from this present level of squalor in mist of plenty to a level that is commiserate with the wealth with which we are blessed with. Until we see and feel change in this respect, we shall not rest on our oars. This is our bound.
In doing this, we may step on toes (if need be), offend couple of friends and associate; not intentional though, but to ensure that the welfare of our citizens are guaranteed, in all of our actions, we shall be guided by overriding PUBLIC INTEREST.
Our Core Value:
Freedom is a prized gift from God, this is our core value. We feel a special obligation to defend civil liberties and human rights. Because newspapers and other news media, enjoy and rely on a provision of the Nigeria Constitution and the Freedom of Information Act that guarantee the freedom of the press, to assume an obligation on behalf of our defenseless citizens to defend the rights.
We shall resist the overreaching moves by public authorities to control the culture or private mores. We believe that citizens’ right to privacy, to decide for themselves how best to lead their lives, is not negotiable. It is in keeping with our African roots to champion communal autonomy and the freedom of conscience.
We also believe that in the Nigeria nation-state; all citizens are entitled to live under the same basic framework of laws and enjoy their equal protection, and nobody should be accorded the statues of first class citizens, nor should any Nigerian be regarded or treated in any manner that suggest that they are LESS-NIGERIAN.
We also believe that a private economy requires a robust public infrastructure and a social safety net to prevent some members of society from falling prey to unconscionable levels of poverty and privation that corrode our democracy.
We hold as our abiding commitment to preserve and protect the Niger-Delta natural treasures and it’s Ecosystem; in order to balance the interests of growth and development, and to regulate human activity to preserve the quality of our air and water for generations to come. This we believe, with God we shall achieve! We will not stop digging until we hit GOLD.
