Delta State Commissioner in charge of the Directorate of Local Government Affairs, Mr Bright Edejeghwro has given reason why Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) at the Local Government Councils is abysmally low.
He blamed the policy of contracting revenue generation at that local government level to political godfathers in the area as the major reason why local government cannot generate much revenue to complement whatever comes from the federation account.
The Commissioner who also disclosed that Governor Okowa is an apostle of local government autonomy, said the present government in the state had gone out of it way to augment the funds available to local councils in order for them to meet up with the payment of primary school teachers salaries along with that of council workers.
Edejeghwro stated this while receiving members of the Indigenous Correspondent Chapel (ICC) of the Delta State NUJ in his office recently at Asaba.
He added that as the then chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council he disbanded a cartel which specializes in illegal increment of workers wage bill noting that his action led the council to be saving 4 million monthly.
On the biometric exercise currently going on at the local government level, he said huge successes has been recorded adding that the clock in and clock out policy will be improve upon to checkmate the activities of dubious workers who may want to render the initiative useless.
Earlier, the Chairman of ICC, Comr. Barth Ozah had thanked the Commissioner for the modest achievement recorded so far in the Ministry and urge him to do more for the benefit of Deltans.
